It's that time of year again, yes it is December and Christmas is approaching fast. Everywhere we go and everything we see in the shops seem to have some sort of offer attached to it. You might ask yourself why is this necessary seeing as it is Christmas after all and people are going to purchase gifts? In my opinion the reason the shops are all competing against each other is because of the significant rise in online retail. I remember as a child going to Merchants Quay in Cork and we could be queuing for up to an hour for parking. Nowadays you can drive into most car parks as soon as you arrive and once you get inside, the shops do not seem as busy as before. I think all of this has happened because of the increase in people doing their Christmas shopping online. Most of the shops like Easons and Smyths for example now do free delivery to your front door, saving you the hassle of bringing your children out and spending extra on parking, fuel , etc. In my own experience there is a much wider variety of items available online. For example I was looking for a DVD as a present for someone for Christmas, after trying three different shops with no luck I found it online and within four days it was at my front door. So while there are bargains and stress-free shopping available to you in the comfort of your own home the question I ask is, does anything actually beat the feeling of Christmas shopping in town with the music, decorations and Christmas lights? I guess it is up to every individual to decide but for me it's town all the way unless there is something specific that I cannot get in the shops.
