Comparative group work on cultural context:
The Book Thief (BT) is set in Germany before and during WWII, with a divided delineated society ruled by a Nazi dictatorship; this affects the characters greatly as it results in the inequality of their place in society.
The Book Thief (BT) is set in Nazi Germany before and during WWII, shown from a child’s perspective, highlights different economic backgrounds, religious beliefs and how they are exploited to enforce the persecution of the Jews and increase the power of the Nazis.
The Constant Gardener (CG) is a contrast between the rich patriarchal western world and the poorer exploited developing world where no government is concerned with the well-being of the people, this is shown through the two main characters of bureaucratic Justin and socialist Tessa.
The Constant Gardener (CG) is set between 21st Century Kenya and London, there is a social and economic class between the two, showing the reality of wealth in contrast with extreme poverty: wealth, social status and politics determine power in these contrasting societies.
Sive is set in 1950s Ireland in an unfair Catholic society where wealth dominates who has power; men and women have segregated roles and arranged marriage and money play an important part in the lives of the central characters.
Sive is set in 1950s Ireland: an isolated, conservative, Catholic influenced society where the wealthy have power in a male dominated world where children are powerless.

It was a cold autumn evening and I was minding my brother while my parents went out. We were just sitting down to dinner when we heard a loud smash from the bathroom upstairs. I ran to the cupboard under the stairs grabbed the baseball bat and gave my brother a golf club. We tiptoed up the stairs and heard a loud bang against the wall, I crept to the bathroom door and pushed the door open, standing there with my baseball bat at the ready, a pigeon flies out, the bathroom window had been left open. I have never been so relieved to see a pigeon before.

We were just sitting down for dinner when we heard the tremendous screech of brakes. My mother and I scrambled out of the kitchen and towards the front door. Through the thin window pane at a glance I could see the lorry driver standing, pale faced looking towards the ground. My heart thumping through my chest, I began to get that 'sick' feeling in my stomach. By the time I reached the side of the lorry my legs had turned to jelly. Lying motionless, not moving an inch, he lay there. Suddenly a light pant, a glimmer of hope. But for the last time I said 'Good dog'.

We were just sitting down for dinner when I heard a creak very strange creak kept and kept and kept on going.I was wondering to myself who is it what is it?? Then it suddenly stopped no more creaking it was all silent. So i thought to myself what shall i do, however i couldn’t do anything. Everything was fading away because it was only a dream and i had imagined it. However what a great dream it was i thought to myself that i was going to die but it all turned out differently. WHAT AN AMAZING DREAM!

It was a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. My family and I had been tidying the attic because the weather was so bad. We decided to take a break to get our dinner. We were just sitting down for dinner when my oldest sister (who wasn't hungry so decided to keep tidying) left out a big scream. I leapt from the table to go and find out what had happened. I walked up the steps to the attic and that's when I saw it. The shiniest diamond I have ever seen. She had found it stuffed away in an old box. A on million euro diamond!

We were just sitting down for dinner when I heard the crashing noise outside in the garden. We froze, not knowing what to think. Mum rose with caution to investigate the situation. She peeled open the back door carefully, and in one swift movement, and a shrill scream, it was slammed shut. She looked out, not only to find our garden turned upside down, but a lion was making its way for her! After several hours of pandamonium, a man, dressed in a sparkly leotard, called by our house. Luckily for us, the lion had broken out of the circus in the field next door.

It was a Christmas day, I had opened all my presents delighted with what I had got from the man himself. Mam was out cooking dinner, dad was lighting the fire so I decided to go build a snowman to pass time. An hour had gone past and I was finally called, we were just sitting down for dinner when there was a knock on the door, I answered the door only to see a group of people singing Christmas songs way out of tune. Ten minutes went by I was getting really hungry so I slammed the door, ran to the table and stuffed my face.

when on my travels home i met people of all sorts, tall skinny small and plum but all had smiles UPON THEIR FACES. GREETING AND WAVING, EXCITEMENT AND JOY WAS IN THE AIR. AS I OPEN MY GATE AND ON PURPOSE PUT ONE LEG FIRMLY IN FRONT OF THE OTHER IT STILL WASN'T ENOUGH TO STOP ME FROM SLIGHTLY SLIPPING BUT STUMBLING TO MY FEET AGAIN. HOME SAFELY DINNER WAS READY, YOU COULD HEAR THE BUZZ OF CHAT IN THE ROOM FROM OLD AND YOUNG. PRESENTS OPEN, YOUNG PLAYING. WE WERE JUST SITTING DOWN FOR MY DINNER WHEN I WAS HANDED A PRESENT. It was a Sunday afternoon and as was now tradition we had our annual visit from my mother’s friend along with their posh family. My mother and her friend went to school together and throughout their friendship there has been constant competition to prove who has been the most successful. So for this Sunday we were warned to be on our best behaviour, so as to advance ahead of our opposition. We were just sitting down for dinner when my brother foolishly pulled the chair from beneath one of our guests. Our guests didn’t find this in the least amusing nor did my mother. 1-0 to the opposition.

It was a Monday. Mondays are usually pretty uneventful for the most part. But this particular Monday was different. Have you ever had an overwhelming sense that something bad is about to happen? It’s a terrifying feeling. And for some unexplained reason, that’s how I felt when I awoke that morning.
My boyfriend laughed when I told him. I was a bit annoyed, but shouldn’t have expected him to understand. It did sound a bit crazy. Was I being paranoid? We were just sitting down for dinner when my mobile rang. I picked it up, my heart racing. - That one phone call changed my life forever.

We were just sitting down to dinner when the car screeched into the driveway. We froze, my brother in mid-stride. My parents’ heads snapped to the window as the car doors opened, a look of abject horror on their faces. Three people, covered in the black of night were outside. We ran. We sprinted upstairs, my mother sliding under the bed and my father and brother squeezing into the closet. I panicked, nowhere for me to hide: so much for family unity. Footsteps sounded on the stairs, I frantically searched for a way out. Oh hell, ........ better go and greet my cousins.

She had decided she was going out with her friends last night. She wasn't coming home, she was staying at a 'friends' because it would be too late by the time she got a lift back home. Mum warned her to be careful, and let her know how she was getting on. It was a stormy evening, the winter was crawling in on us. Morning had come and no word about how the night had been. We were anxious now. Both my parents stayed by the phone, waiting for it to ring. We were just sitting down for dinner when the doorbell rang. A policeman. My heart sank.

My parents left my siblings and I home alone one Halloween. We were just sitting down for dinner when the doorbell rang. I slowly made my way to the hall where I heard strange noises. I could hear faint groans, as if somebody was in pain. My heart began to race, thoughts of ghosts awakening on Halloween rushed around my brain. I slowly twisted the doorknob, contemplating the worst. “TRICK OR TREAT!” exclaimed the group of children. I jumped with fright. Looking around the group of children, I noticed one at the back, holding his stomach. He must have had one too many treats, I giggled to myself.

We were just sitting down for dinner when, I heard an alarming knock on the door. I continued with my dinner, until Mam asked me to attend to the door. It was Lucy, our neighbour. She looked quite dazed and confused. 'Come quickly, all of you ', she said breathlessly. I grabbed my coat and without hesitation we scrambled out the door, following Lucy's direction. A worried look had crept upon my parents faces.Worrying thoughts were swarming around my head. We soon found ourselves at the bottom of our long and winding lane, where an enormous, bright and colourful hot air balloon lay upon the ground.

We were just sitting down for dinner when I heard him upstairs. I coughed
loudly hoping nobody had noticed. My father eyed me suspiciously, “I left my
radio on, I’ll be right back” I offered. My sister and I exchanged knowing
glances. I crawled the stairs, not knowing what was awaiting. I peered around
my bedroom door. I wanted to cry as I looked at what used to be my room. He sat
there in the middle of his misdeed, the look of defeat on his face, mirrored in
mine. I knew what I had to do. “Everything will be fine”, I convinced myself,
“Everybody likes puppies.”

It was a sunny, June day but more importantly it was mid-silage season. We were flat out baling and wrapping all morning so when we got the call from granny that the dinner was ready we were relieved! We were just sitting down for dinner when TJ Reid, the Kilkenny hurler but also a salesman for Red Mills, came knocking at the door to sell us nuts for the cattle but this time he had a surprise for me… it was a hill ticket for the up-coming All-Ireland Hurling Senior Final. I couldn’t believe my luck! We will definitely be buying our nuts off TJ from now on.

We were just sitting down for dinner when, my parents dropped the bombshell. No where
in my wildest dreams had I ever expected anything like this. My siblings and I looked at each other in disbelief
knowing that from this moment on everything was about to change. I felt dizzy and my hands were
trembling with both fear and excitement. This could not be happening to us ! My parents were speaking
but words had no meaning. I was in my own little world. What would life be like from here on ? Only time
would tell. Imagine we were the sole winners in the Euromillions jackpot worth fifty million.

We were just sitting down for dinner when the coloured edge of a sail appeared in the distance. I looked to my grief-stricken companions who reflected my desperation. We watched for a long time, oblivious to our hard earned food. Hours passed that seemed like seconds until the ship claimed reality. A foreign feeling of hope burned deep down. We ran, fast and far, screaming with joyous disbelief. “We need fire“, someone shrieked. As the fire reluctantly came to life, a gloating, icy drip of water raced down my cheek, followed by a mocking other. Seconds passed that seemed like hours, the fire quenched, and the ship passed…..

We were just sitting down for dinner when we heard this loud alarm screaming through the streets of our town. Yes, it was an attack warning.
As instructed to do so, we made our way down to our basement where they said we’d be safer. We only got there when the bomb hit with an ear-deafening bang. We waited a long and painful two hours. Finally we left our house to see the damage; we were one of the fortunate ones. We had survived. If we were ten seconds slower, I would have been included in the many students to be taken off the attendance sheet in school.

What a feeling. The world passing by, not a care in my mind, one moment I'm in one unknown, non familiar country and the next I'm cruising to another. The comforting, soft clouds protecting me from harm, yet I couldn't bring myself to look out the plane slit window,in fear of hyperventilating.Excitement flooded over me like a crashing wave,I was too impatient to ge to Paris! However my fellow plane companions weren't very socialable...We were just sitting down for dinner when,an announcement pierced my eardrums-'we will be arriving in Dublin in one hour' I was stunned into silence for my own stupidity....

Thought it was going to be a normal day. Really, I did.
I was wrong.
It was a nice day. Hazy. Average. With huge clouds in the sky. Nothing special.
We were just sitting down for dinner when a glinting, black car pulled up outside the front window. My Dad's face turned an ashen grey.
"Go to your room. Lock the door. Don't come out,"
I don't know why I did. I had to, I guess.
Blocking out the ugly sounds coming from the kitchen. And the crashes.
Then the silence.
I turned the key in the door.
Slowly.
I opened the door.
Gently.
And then I screamed.....

We were just sitting down for dinner when, all of a sudden we heard a huge crash coming from the sitting room. We all rushed in and were shocked to see an Elephant, poking his head there the massive hole now left in our wall from his rampage. No one could quite believe their eyes. Where had he even come from? How did he manage to run into the side of our house? Ever the calm one, my mother quietly closed the door to the room and backed away slowly, motioning for us all to go upstairs. She then grabbed the phone and followed us up. I was just looking at her thinking "Who would you even ring in a situation like this?".

would stop a clock, as I opened the door stood two well built men in army suits.
Straight away I knew what this was about and falling to the floor when I heard

We were just sitting down to dinner when there was a deafening rattle. Panicked, I froze in my seat, expecting the worst. Thinking back now I'm embarrassed by the totally far-fetched conclusions I came to. An axe murderer come to murder us all while we sat in the next room oblivious? A poor homeless sod who just happened to be wandering through the countryside and smelled our delicious fajitas? The next door neighbour breaking and entering to leave a note, "Spreading slurry tomorrow, don't put clothes on the line"? The relief I felt when I discovered it was only the radio turned up too loud was indescribable.
